Illegally high air pollution causes more than 40,000 premature deaths in the UK annually. Our poor air quality kills 300 people every year in Bristol so, in Parliament, I have been working hard on policy to improve the air we breathe, including as part of the joint select committee panel.

The Courts have repeatedly ordered the Government back to the drawing board, ruling that they are not doing nearly enough or acting soon enough to tackle the pollution crisis. Today was the High Court’s final deadline, but the Government has ducked and dived, using last minute legal manoeuvres to avoid having to produce a comprehensive plan that will actually save lives.

We needed urgent action from Ministers years ago – it is reckless and irresponsible to delay even longer.
