A report published today by the Public Accounts Committee, on which Bristol South MP Karin Smyth sits, examined the ‘staggering and unacceptable [£1.2 billion] increase’ in the cost of electrifying the Great Western Main Line after ‘serious failings’ by the Government and Network Rail, which have delayed the programme by three years. The report says that it still not clear whether the project can be delivered on its revised budget or, indeed, if it will ever be delivered at all.

I highlighted the importance of electrifying the line, along with the need for better suburban rail, including a reopened St Anne’s Park station, at a recent debate in Parliament.
