Kerry backs ban on primates as pets

Home / News / News from Westminster / Kerry backs ban on primates as pets

03 March 2017

Across the UK, five thousand primates are kept as pets in unsuitable conditions, causing them to suffer physically and emotionally. Even when the owners has good intentions, the animals’ needs are not met and cannot be within the confines of someone’s home. No matter how endearing they may be, they simply are not suitable pets.

Fifteen European countries have already banned keeping either some or all species of primates as pets, and I support the calls of the RSPCA, British Veterinary Association, and others for the UK Government to do so too. I would also urge anyone considering purchasing a monkey as a pet to think again.
