Kerry welcomes compulsory SRE

28 February 2017

I welcome the news that the Government will update guidance for both primary and secondary schools to ensure that all children receive age-appropriate compulsory sex and relationships education.

We must educate children on the risks posed in an age of online pornography, sexting, and an increasingly sexualised – and, for many children, confusing – popular culture. It is also important to teach children what healthy relationships, based on respect, look like, and what behaviour - abuse, coercion, control - is not acceptable.

Along with charities, and the vast majority of children and parents, I have been calling for such changes since my first term in Parliament and will continue to monitor the details which follow today’s announcement.
