Kerry supports mental health charity

30 March 2017

I recently showed my support for a new charity, MQ: Transforming Mental Health, which is focusing on increasing funding for research into mental health - specifically for young people, since 75% of mental illness is thought to start before the age of 18.

The importance of removing the stigma around mental health, improving treatment, and properly funding research has tragically once again been highlighted this week after news of the fifth suspected student suicide at the University of Bristol in this academic year.

My thoughts are with the families and friends of Elsa, who was 21; Lara, 23; Miranda, 19; Daniel, 18; and Kim, 18.

These issues are something which I will continue to raise in Parliament, as I did earlier this year.

If you are going through a mental health crisis, please seek medical help through your local GP or call the Samaritans for free on 116 123. Their lines are open 24/7, and you don’t have to give your name or any personal information.
